The Peninsula Hotel, Tokyo

The Peninsula Tokyo blends contemporary design with Japanese heritage. The combined work of celebrated architect Kazukiyo Sato and interior designer Yukio Hashimoto brings a new aesthetic to Japan with the creation of The Peninsula Tokyo, a new landmark hotel where Japanese culture and seasons are reflected in a thoroughly modern context throughout the hotel’s design and facilities.

The Peninsula Hotels deliberately selected a modern Japanese ambience for its latest property. The only free-standing hotel to be opened in Tokyo in a decade, The Peninsula Tokyo is contemporary, yet echoes Japan’s rich heritage and culture in its design – both exterior and interior – including a plethora of Japanese artworks totalling nearly 1,000 and created by nearly 60 artists, 90% of them Japanese using traditional techniques and methods.

Kazukiyo Sato’s vision of the hotel as a traditional Japanese lantern standing proud at the entrance to Marunouchi and Ginza sets the tone from the outset. The exterior is amber Namibian granite, which provides a pleasant contrast to the neighbouring grey stone buildings.

The Lobby is two storeys high, with ivory walls and wooden lattices, echoing the senbongoshi of old Kyoto, the nation’s former capital and still the centre of Japanese culture. The lattice motif is also found throughout the hotel, in corridors, guestrooms and public areas.

The 1,313 crystal LED light bulbs of the unique concave chandelier in the centre of the Lobby resemble a cloud ofhanabi (fireworks) or hotaru (fireflies), while the carpet design of pine needles links the Lobby to the pines of the garden and the Imperial Gardens beyond. The Peninsula Tokyo offers 314 spacious guestrooms – among the largest in Tokyo – including 47 suites, that bond nature’s elements with traditional Japanese skills to provide a tranquil and serene setting.

Moreover there are 5 unique restaurants, a modern lounge bar, 2 ballrooms, 6 elegantly designed function rooms, a wedding chapel, a Japanese ceremony room, a fitness centre, The Peninsula Spa by ESPA and 3 luxury jewellery shops, all making their retail debut in Japan – Graff, de Grisogono and Chantecler Tokyo.
